Alexander Springs Wrap Up

April 9, 2012

Many of us have shared wonderful trips to Alexander Springs National Recreational Area .

Thirteen of us kayaked, camped, swam and enjoyed great fellowship around the campfire Friday through Sunday March 23 – March 25, 2012.  We enjoyed each other and the weather was spectacular. We were able to make the kayak from the Spring to the second Forest Service take out in 5 hours, better than the 7 hours in 2009.

The beauty of this Spring Fed Run is the water clarity throughout its course, and the lack of development as it winds through the east end of the Ocala National Forest.

There a tremendous amount of white Spider Lillies along the banks.

I was able to teach a small number of natural navigation skills such as using the Sun and wind for direction and time….

In the future, I will bring 1:24, OOO USGS maps so we can get oriented and do some map reading to go with Natural Navigation.

I don’t know if there is anything more invigorating and refreshing than swimming and diving deep into the spring after a lengthy kayak journey. I then had the excuse to swim in the Run for sometime downstream as my Sister in Law Robbin and I cleaned debris form the bottom of the Run.

Thanks to Ann Marie for co leading and to everyone who came…..Matt, Austin, Kathy, Dan, Cheryl, Butch, Josie, John, Margo, Alissa, Susan and Lenora.
